Background:  Jacques was born and raised by French Canadian immigrants in West Hartfod  Vermont.  His father had a tannery and shop in the village and supplied the surrounding farms with well made, practical leather goods.

The eldest of 13 children, Jacques contributed to the support of his younger siblings from the age of ten by working in the shop when not attending school. He graduated at the age of thirteen and contiued in the shop until he joined the army. He spent his spare time roaming the woods, hunting, fishing, swimming in the rivers and climbing the mountains north of town.
