Yukiko is a newcomer to Gainesville. Some people have said that she was abandoned by her family because she was a girl after Communist China adopted the one-child policy in 1979. Those who have espoused that point of view have suggested that she was adopted by an American family who took mercy on the poor thing. Of course, there are no local families who can claim credit for the selfless deed. Others - mostly those with a smidgen more education noted that she still has an Asian name, two of them. These think tanks have posited that an American family would have given their adopted daughter their own American last name - Something like Smith - and may even have changed her first name as well.

Those who paid attention to things actually happening in the world instead of simply falling back on gossip and wild conjecture noted that a Dr. Yang and a Dr. Sato recently moved to town to begin work at the Magadon research center and brought their daughter along with them. Of course, the fact that neither these foreigners nor their daughter have appeared in church has likely contributed to the whispers and misinformation.

Speaking fluent English with only a faint accent, Yukiko has not had trouble acclimating to life in town by virtue of any difficulties with the local language. Rather, she is a strange, morbid child interested in things that most people never think about and often find distasteful when they do. Horror films, death, medicine, fortune-telling, strange puzzles, and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons make up the bulk of the young girl's interests and any one of these items could be enough to put one of the locals off.

While younger children do not tend to grow quite as fast as some do in high school, she is one of the smallest - if not the smallest - children in the sixth grade. At 54" tall and only 60 lbs, she is closer to the size of the average third grade girl than her classmates.

Not known, specifically, to be a troublemaker, Yukiko has gotten in trouble at school on a handful of occasions. One or two of her teachers sent her to the office for saying.. something.. to them in a language they didn't know and in a tone they found threatening. She refused to explain what she'd said and consequently was punished for disrupting class. There is no evidence to support it, but it was whispered earlier in the school year that she hadn't just been cursing out the teacher with swears in a strange language, but had been attempting to place some form of 'magical' curse on them. No one can say for sure.
