Xannan

Xannan is a young halfling male. He usually wears simple loose-fitting traveller's clothes. He remembers very little of his first few years of life, and does not remember his mother at all. He was raised from a young age at a monastery dedicated to Eldath, goddess of peace. The night before his tenth year at the monastery his master revealed to him that his mother had come to the monastery and begged the monks to take care of her son, for she had fallen pregnant out of wedlock and was shamed by her community. The monks had taken pity on the halfling woman and her young son, promising to raise him.

Years passed. The masters of the monastery gave the young halfling the name Xannan, an ancient word meaning the unmoving fist. He faced and overcame many hardships during his time at the monastery, partly due to being the only halfling and never knowing his biological family. He came to accept the monastery as his family, and after many hard years, was deemed a young, trained monk.

The monks had known for years that goblins and other monsters roamed the hills around their monastery. The monks studied them, learned their languages when possible, but generally avoided contact with any from outside the monastery walls. One fateful night a large band of goblins and orcs attacked the monastery. The monks, including Xannan, fought hard, but were eventually overwhelmed and slaughtered. Xannan was able to hide amongst the wreckage of a burnt and ruined building.

Once the monsters had finished their looting and pillaging and moved on, Xannan crawled from his hiding spot, shamed that he could not do more to help his monastic family. He vowed then and there to never dishonour himself, his family or any friends he may make, ever again.

He roamed the countryside for a few years, living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle in solitude. He has recently begun visiting settlements, due to a growing desire for companionship, to learn more about the good people of the world, and to possibly find his halfling family.
