A set of twins were born as part of the Myriad Throne's experiments with mages. The girl, who showed no magical adeptness by the time she was six years old, was cleansed of her memories through a ritual and tossed into a local orphanage; the boy, on the other hand, was constantly in flux, appearing and disappearing seemingly without any control over the powers. The Throne named him Cyran and made it their goal to understand his powers and learn how they could be controlled. The girl was originally called Syvelle by the orphanage, but came to be known as Fox or sometimes Sly, due to her cunning and her dark red-brown hair.

Unbeknownst to the Throne, Fox retained her memories and grew up well aware of their experimentation and their imprisonment of her brother. With time, she came to realize that thought and memory were her gifts: the flash of images or thoughts that sometimes erupted when she touched an item or a person were not commonplace, but a sign that she was reaching out into the past or the future. The magic was mostly garbled, but it did allow her to impress people along the way, and in her teens she successfully joined one of the key revolutionary efforts, and quickly rose to a top position. Dethroning the Throne has always been her goal, but freeing her brother—and the many others in the same position as he—is just as important.
