Adelaide is a smaller sized human of average proportions. A widow, she tries to keep up appearances in hopes of catching a handsome man one day, by following a nightly regimen of washing her face with cold well water and rolling her hair in homemade stick rollers and rag curls (she'd be so envious of modern day foam rollers). Following her mother's recipes, she makes herbal creams to keep her skin soft and supple. Her beauty regimen though is not able to hide the developing crows feet around her eyes and the sun spots beginning to form from long days working in the field. At  30, she's getting old.

A commoner, she wears a simple dress she keeps mended to the best of her means and polishes her leather shoes regularly. When she smiles, she avoids showing her teeth in order to hide that she's missing a tooth here and there due to the inability to afford one of those people called a "dentist."

Having lived in a rural village her entire life, her community was her world. She learned magic from her mother, Agnes, who was the local witch and respected healer. At 19, she married Tobias who was the kindest and best looking lad in the area. A year later, Eunice came along. At 25, the Red Fever spread to the village. She was spared, Eunice pulled through unscathed, but even her mother's potions and spells couldn't save Tobias and their newborn, Byron.  The next five years were full of hard work as she had to manage the plot on her own, producing enough goods to please the local lord, and spending time trying to learn more magic and teaching her knowledge to Eunice.

Six months ago, the local lord stopped by late one night, drunk like usual. Adelaide was short on her wheat production again, and he wanted alternate payment. He tried to enter the hut, but she kept him away with a new spell she learned wherein flames came from her hands. Wounded he told her she'd pay for what she did, then left. Two weeks later, she was working in the field and Eunice was out picking rushes. She heard Eunice screaming from the woods, and ran toward her, but was too late to save her. She was only able to see Eunice tied up and hooded on the back of a horse that was galloping away, ridden by a man she could not recognize. Having figured it was related to the threat the lord made, she did some investigating.  The lord's servant said a strange man was summoned by the lord, the man having came from a far away place called Green Valley.
