American born. Wealthy polymath / dilettante with ties to the Girard family fortune.

Born in Philadelphia in 1863, his father moved the Bickham family to New Orleans after the anguish of the American Civil War when he was a teenager in 1878. There he began working in his father’s lucrative shipping business. A bit of a charlatan, he garnished a bad reputation as a young man and almost sullied the family’s stature after a scandalous incident with an older, wealthy, married woman in New Orleans. He was sent to England in 1881 to get away and spare his family’s good standing. While in England he attended Cambridge University where he made friends with Irish Nationalists (members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood ? a secret oath-bound organization) even privately backing some of their dealings financially. He did not graduate from Cambridge, although he did study a broad range of subjects as well as acquiring the training to become a skilled surgeon.
“Spencer” (as he is known) is an experienced carouser who relies on his family’s wealth to get him into and out of trouble, as well as the research facilities at Cambridge. Currently, he is fascinated with learning more about hypnotism, mysticism, and the occult.
