Thane Bristol

Thane Bristol grew up in a “modest” noble home yet despaired at the treatment and inequality shown to those in the lower classes. The most striking example was when the island’s nobles had a wall erected around the inner part of the city to create a barrier between the nobles and what had become the slums, a division that was already in stark contrast. Unable to help those in need due to his lack of power and status growing up, Thane joined the Navy as soon as possible to attempt to bring about change. Once in the Navy, Thane learned about navigation and cartography, rising in the Navy’s ranks for his navigational aptitude and prowess. Eventually being promoted to serving under Vice Admiral Preston Morrow, Thane began to see the dark side of what the Navy called “justice”, including merciless buster calls and other atrocities. This reached a breaking point when Morrow was ordered to confront up and coming rookie pirate named Cable “The Kraken” Knotley, who had eaten an octopus Zoan type devil fruit, and his crew. When Knotley, who was in his full Zoan form, had been cornered by Morrow, Thane witnessed the horrors Morrow’s justice: Morrow systematically amputated Knotley’s arms prior to finishing him off using his signature Wabisuke, one of the 50 skillful grade swords. In shock, Thane didn’t immediately hear the orders to examine the belongings of the now eradicated pirate crew, but he found himself suddenly on the former crew’s ship when he escaped his daze. In going through items on their ship, Thane found an odd looking fruit. Recognizing it as a Devil Fruit, Thane instantly decided he must keep it out of the hands of Morrow, and the best way to do so was to consume it on the spot so as to not be noticed by other members of the Navy nearby. After consuming the fruit, Thane began to experience the effects of what he came to know was the Wopu-Wopu no Mi. The Wopu-Wopu no Mi allowed Thane to teleport short distances. Fortunately, no one else noticed the initial, uncontrolled warps to occurred soon after consuming the fruit (including once while Morrow was nearby). Thane quickly gained a level of control over the warping ability so as to only warp intentionally and not be discovered by other members of the Navy. Before Morrow and the Navy were set to leave the island, Thane began planning his escape, relying on using his warp abilities to sneak away and evade notice. When Morrow’s group went to face off against their next enemy, Thane used the chaos of the battle to escape notice of both sides, and faked his death (leaving behind his uniform, etc. in tatters over a marred corpse). Once Morrow and the other members of the Navy left, Thane began living a solitary like on this new island, [insert island where will meet crew]. Unable to allow injustice to happen before him, Thane began to use his newfound warping powers to become a vigilante (i.e. Batman in that operated at night/Robin Hood-worked to help the poor), and thus began the rumors of “The Shadow”. However, the island did not have much crime to begin with, and his solitary life did not do sate Thane’s desire for societal change and the love of traveling he had developed while in the Navy, especially the feel of the ocean breeze from the crow’s nest.
