Sentinel
Background: In 1930 Garret Huxley stumbled upon the entrance to an unexplored tomb in the Valley of the Kings. His excitement overrode his good sense and he plunged ahead into the tunnel-system in hopes of fame and fortune. Instead he discovered an expansive, winding labyrinth which quickly confused the intrepid explorer. Stumbling for hours Garret eventually found a strange room, the hieroglyphs appeared Egyptian but many of the icons were completely unknown. With his last torch fading, Garret managed a crude translation. Mumbling the words aloud released the stored mystic energy held within the temple and...Garret disappeared.
He found himself on the plane of Babylon in the City of Man. Surrounded by strange extra-dimensional beings, terrified beyond reason, he fled into the labyrinth. But The City stretched forever, encompassing the plane itself. The Englishman adjusted to this new home, its strange citizens and the powers that made this plane of reality their domain. Years passed though time itself behaves differently in the Lower Planes. Garret's natural mystical talents drew from the plane's rich energy source and eventually he was accepted into a sect. Many of the secrets of the Universe were shown to him including the nightmares that dwell therein. He witnessed the multitude of alternate dimensions including the destruction brought by powerful beings such as Skarn the Shaper and Tyrannon the Conqueror.
90 years later Garret stepped back into our world through a dimensional weak spot. Time had not touched the young explorer but he was no longer the same man as before. Now a potent mystic master in his own right, the young man from England no longer sought fortune in the dead; he had dedicated himself to protecting the living from threats that would drive most insane.
Upon his return he sought out his family in Sheffield only to learn that many had died during WWII. After some digging he discovered one relative, his great-great grand niece, Bethany. Wanting an anchor to help him adjust to his new (old) home and this new time-period, Garret sought her out and eventually told her his story.
