Leander Stoltzfus

Name: Leander Stoltzfus
Unit: 44th new York Artillery
Age: 19
Gender: male
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 150
Handedness: Right
Birthplace: Bird-In-Hand, PA
Native Language: English
Other Languages: Latin, German

Appearance/Demeanor: Leander is not an outgoing personality. If one were to study his appearance and demeanor, one might infer that he was not particularly happy as a soldier. He often seems distracted, to be thinking, or just bored.

Leander was born into an Amish community in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, near to Lancaster. His mother, father, and siblings, all were content to live within that heritage and society. Leander was not.

As Leander grew older, he received an excellent education, and was apprenticed to a carpenter. Unfortunately, much of what he learned was outside of the Amish school system. His non-Amish teachers, from without the community, often were contemptuous of the Amish way of life. This rubbed off on Leander. The older he got, the more he wished to leave for one of the big cities.

He liked being by himself, had an aptitude for being comfortable around wild and tame animals, and enjoyed learning the trade of carpentry. However, he often caused trouble in the community by not following the rules and favoring prohibited technology. The older he got, the more the Amish in his community wished for him to leave.  He left for Philadelphia at 18.

He did not fit into the outside world either. Carpentry and animals did not always go well together in the city. People made fun of his accent. He had few friends. The army might be better. He accepted a bounty to join an artillery unit in the Union Army in New York City.
