Born in the Catskills, Jim longed to see the world, but all he saw was the family shop where he learned to repair things.  He became adept at fixing whatever was broken, from wagon hitches to pocket watches.  When war came to his world, he was conscripted into the 44th New York, where his skills were immediately ignored.  He became a cannon loader.  Maybe the future holds better things for him?
