Edmund was born in Boston 01 Apr 1851 and orphaned three years later. Raised by the Sisters of Mercy. His youth was one of hardship prompting him to delight by the opportunity to be apprenticed at 12, to a blacksmith Jeddiah Jones. Edmund took to the Trade with zeal, surpassing his Master's expectations, excelling in every aspect of the Trade and completing his apprenticeship at 14. At 15 Jeddiah encouraged and sponsored Edmunds Study of Engineering; which he Completed and graduated in two years, whilst continuing his daily Smithing duties under Jeddiah's guidance.
