Background: Grew up with an older brother named Harris, playing hide & seek, hunting, fishing, and climbing trees in the North Woods. Father was a constable in Lewiston. Mother was a school teacher who taught all the Barton children to read and write. Randolph went to work for the Androscoggin and Kennebec Railroad (known locally as "A&K") when he was 14 years old, starting out as an errand boy in the section crew, then picking up some skills with maintenance, before moving on to signals and switches. He spent most of his time in the yard at Lewiston, but occasionally was asked to work jobs at different stations along the line to Waterville.
