Brother Jas

Brother Jas is a good-looking young
human who is either on the high-end of
short, or the low-end of average,
height and a slim, but healthy, build.
His wavy hair is of an auburn tone,
and of shoulder-length, his intense
eyes are brown with green flecks, his
complexion fair but freckled (with the
periodic mole that seems oddly stiff)
and an infectious smile.  His clothing
is sturdy, utilitarian, and gives no
indication of what his trade might be.
Weapon wise, he carries a spear that is
usually capped to protect the blade,
and prevent the occasional accidental
injury, several throwing blades, and
nothing more obvious.

Brother Jas is fairly young as a travelling monk goes.  Orphaned and living on the streets near the docks of Taristhum by the age of five, Jas has little memory of his parents other than seeing their faces in dreams, both of loving moments, and nightmares filled with running and terror.  He is not even sure how they died.  He only remembers being unable to leave their ramshackle one-room for several days because he was afraid to move past their bodies.  That same day was the first time he stole something, grabbing fruit from a vendor when a display on thenotherside of the stall mysteriously fell over and distracted the owner; his parents had taught him a bit of magic that he had used to make it happen.
It was not long before he was recruited into the local guild, having been watched as he quickly figured out how to survive on the streets, and that the best foods to steal were not in Dockside, and how to use his pathetically cute appearance to get others to give him food.
However, despite the offer of protection and training, guildmembership did not suit Jas very well.  His small size made him a target of bullies who just loved to beat him up, and he often did not meet the required quotas which often resulted in more beatings; he had never developed an enjoyment of stealing from other people, usually taking little more than enough to get his next meal.  He did, however, manage to make one friend, a young, but older, thief, going by the name Alleycat, who helped Jas chase off bullies a handful of times.
One day, he attempted to steal the coin purse of a traveller, only to be caught by her strong arm.  Revealing herself as a Paladin of Ilmater, instead of taking the boy to the constabulary, she instead took him to a monastery.  There, he learned from, and trained with, the monks, who accepted all who came to them in need, becoming one of heir initiates.
A secular, as opposed to a religious order, the monastery specialized primarily in training for the artisan guilds, allowing Jas to earn the multi-colored iron cube of a Chef and Bakers' Guild journeyman.  Now, he is on his journeyman's travels to improve his skills, and to learn about his parents and the ring they left him.
