 Born thirty odd winters ago, to a small ranch owner, he was one of five sons. He grew to manhood learning the cattle business. He had no further ambition then to work his family ranch, but then the war came.

 Rufus flocked to the cause of the south, and his native state of Texas. He joined the 8th Texas Cavalry, and fought in most of its engagements in the western theater.

 With the ending of the war, Texas was impoverished like the rest of the south. The family ranch was lost to taxes, and carpet baggers. Rufus drifted west, with no real purpose in life.
