Mikhail Dubrinsky was born in the Carpathian Mountains and at the behest of the Dark Twins, Lucian and Gabriel, ascended to his father's role as Prince of the Carpathians after the death of his parents during the Ottoman Turk wars.

Many fans disagree with Vladimer's choice in not preparing Mikhail to become prince. This is mentioned in Before the Dark, as Vladimer thought it would appear that he was giving up on Draven if he trained Mikhail, but Vladimer left his second born son a journel, explaining what would be expected of him. It is unclear if Mikhail ever found it.
