About Your character: | I grew up a half a day North of Charleston in the great state of South Carolina, the jewel of the Confederate States of America. Daddy had a rice plantation along the Cooper there. Momma died when I was just three of the fever, but Daddy remarried just before my seventh birthday to some woman from Tennessee named Charlotte. I never did come to call her momma, but she did not seem to mind my calling her Miss Charlotte. Daddy did not like it at all, but he did not force the issue with me. I do believe that he hoped that I would simply come around some day, and it may be that he was right but Miss Charlotte died in a fire first. Oh, I had absolutely nothing to do with setting that fire. Daddy had gone off to fight in The War in the South Carolina Army, so had my younger brother, so it was just myself and Miss Charlotte, and Daddy's negros of course, when those horrible Union boys came down the Cooper just a killing and burning their way along. I got out, but Miss Charlotte was trying to get this little negro baby out too and they both died. I was nearly taken prisoner, but Daddy taught me to shoot and track and ride, and I killed one of those Union boys dead before I got to my horse and rode all through the night. I came across the cavalry regiment that my brother had been attached to and they made sure I made it to Mister Wilford's house down by the sea. I stayed there until my brother came to get me. Daddy had died in The War and the Union had paid our family for the burning of our home, so we went back to rebuild. My brother was eager to start work, but I had other plans. I took some of that money and I left. Oh, my brother did not know about it until some time later I am sure, but I used that money and my own ingenuity to make my way west as far from those Union boys as I could. |
