| About Your character: | Liu was born in mainland China and brought over to California by her widowed father. He had heard tales of the opportunities that awaited those who worked hard in the new world but found California's reality to be quite different. Liu's father took to drinking and eventually lost his life in a mining accident. One of his friends took Liu in and promised to marry her off. Several local men "tried" her but brought her back, not wanting to be married to a "Slant Eye." One of these thought her more property than a wife and branded her with a cattle iron. When he was killed in a card game, accused of cheating, Liu made it back to her father's friend one last time. Having tired of her, her father's friend took out an ad in a dime novel to sell her off as a mail-order bride. Liu was placed on a train, and a ticket was bought for the destination of Sweetwater. She knows nothing of her husband to be. Not even his name. |
