Valeriya ('Val' for friends and family) is the eldest daughter of a couple of refugees from old Russia. They struggled for years and years to climb the corporate ladder, to their present mid-management position at Pharmacorp. They are very keen and anxious for Val to succeed and 'bring the good fortune back to the family'. While they consider that forcing Val to perform from a young age is only 'asking her to do her part for the family', Val strongly disagrees.

She has a younger sister, Natasha (13), who resents Val for all the "attention" she gets from her parents. Tasha doesn't quite get that Val feels more used than loved, treated more like a commercial asset than a daughter.

Her first album, 'Call me Vallie', came out when she was 14. It was an embarrasingly saccharine thing, fully exploiting her childlike looks and voice. It was a runaway success, topped by the next one, ('valKer1a'), released last year, called by critics 'a confident coming-of-age reinvention', by which they meant she was pressured into a more adult and sexier image. In between, she has done cameos in half a dozen movies and become a brand ambassador for the teenage line of Eji of Tokyo.

Naturally, 99% of the money has gone to her parents. Val is starting to get tired of being treated like a tamed animal, doing tricks for someone else's gain.
