Family: Paul Jacobs (father, 55, status unknown), Miranda Jacobs (stepmother, 48, status unknown), Brandon Jacobs (half-brother, 17, status unknown)

History: Megan's childhood was privileged materially, as her father, Paul Jacobs, was wealthy enough to give his daughter a good start in the world.  When Megan was twelve, however, her mother Lauren Sahmea Jacobs was killed in a climbing accident and Megan's life fell apart in all other respects.  First, her father remarried again within a year, which Megan felt was disrespectful, and to make things worse, her new stepmother, Miranda, didn't quite know how to deal with a stepdaughter.  By the time her brother, Brandon, was born, Megan found herself feeling more and more left out.

Always a good student, this situation led her to focus even more on her studies, hoping to win some praise and attention from her father, with limited success.  Rapidly earning a master's degree in anthropology, she then threw herself into her work and was glad of the chance to travel and make friends.  Her mother had been a member of the Hopi tribe in the American southwest, and since Megan knew the language this culture soon became a specialty of hers, though she has also studied several other groups.

At first resentful of her half-brother, she soon grew genuinely fond of him -- and he of her, much to Miranda's displeasure.  Whenever Megan returns from some exotic location, she always brings a gift for Brandon, now a teenager who thinks Megan's career is amazing.

When the apocalypse first began, Megan was out in the field, at an archaeological dig in northern Mexico.  Finally the news became so dire that she and her four colleagues packed up and started heading back home.  Thanks to various difficulties along the way, Megan is the last survivor of the group.  She is attempting to find news of what happened to her family, though as of yet has not yet been able to get back to her hometown.  At some point, she hopes to reach an area that has cliff dwellings, as these are not only highly defensible, she's also familiar with them because of her work and feels she could survive better in such an area.
