Cain

"They say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time."

- Banksy

General Information

Name: Cain

Nickname: None, currently.

Species:
Otherwise. Cain is unaware of what he is.

Sexual Orientation: Uninterested.

Physical Information

Gender: Male    Age: Mid 20s

Human Hair Color: Brunette

Human Eye Color: Green

Human Distinguishing Marks:

Cain has several odd symbols tattooed on his back, but they are always covered. The spattering of freckles across his nose and cheeks are quite noticeable, however.

Human Description of General Appearance:

Clocking in at 6ft and 170lbs, Cain is quite slim, and the narrowness of his face almost gives him a gaunt appearance. Despite that fact, he is a fairly attractive man, and seems to be healthy.

Cain most often sticks to casual clothing like t-shirts and jeans, but wears a trench coat when the weather takes a turn for the worst. Though he prefers casual wear, he cleans up well when the need arises.

Intelligent and thoughtful, there is an obvious curiosity and a deep well of knowledge hidden behind his kind eyes.

Cain's hair plays jump rope with the line between wavy and curly, and he prefers to remain clean shaven when possible. Though he does put a bit of effort in to get that casual just crawled out of bed look, he'd never admit it.

Alternate Appearance:

Cain's true form isn't much different from his human counterpart. His skin has a blueish tint to it, he appears a few years younger, his eyes have an eerie glow to them and his ears come to a point. Other than that, he looks just like he does in his human form.

Society Information

Occupation:

Unemployed, though he does odd jobs here and there when he needs some extra cash. While he doesn't currently have a job, he has been considering starting his own business, perhaps something a little more interesting than the ground level jobs he's been working thus far. He's even gone as far as sinking most of the cash he's saved up into a down payment on an old building.

What brought you to Port Washington?

That's a good question. Let me know if you find the answer. All I remember is stumbling through a strange door in the woods.

How long has your character been here?

6 Months

Personality Details

Personality:

Cain is a warm soul, always happy to lend a helping hand, when he has the time to do so. He tends to hop the fence between optimist and pessimist, mostly depending on the situation, the topic. In general, he doesn't have a very strong outlook on the controversies that take place between humans and non-humans. They are simply beyond his understanding, or at least his interest.

Cain prefers to keep his thoughts to himself, unless they directly effect the situation he is currently in, in a big way. Not the type to monologue at the most inopportune time like some comic book villain, he prefers to keep his plans, fears and dreams to himself, unless the need to share them is dire.

Cain does not care for violence, and abhors the thought of hurting another living being, but if forced to do so, he will defend himself. He prides himself on having a very even temper, rarely allowing himself to get angry or hold a grudge; however, when he does lose his temper, it generally does not bode well for the one who forced him to lose control.

Strengths:

Despite his short time on this side of the door, Cain is a fast learner, inhumanly so. He seems to absorb any information presented to him, and is able to retain it as a library stores books. His memory seems to be endless and ever expanding, as does his knowledge of the world around him. Having stumbled through the door six months prior with no knowledge of the world and lacking the ability to speak or read English or any other common language, his understanding of his new home grew by the second. Now, six months later, he has a vast collection of facts and information regarding the past, the present, the mundane, the magical and even popular culture.

Weaknesses:

Despite, or maybe in spite of, his enhanced cognitive abilities, he is almost child like in the way he can't remember anything before he stepped through the door. The only memory he retained was his name, Cain, and he doesn't know if there was a middle or last name tied to it. Upon entering the world, Cain had to make new memories to replace the ones he'd lost. Like a newborn baby, he had to discover the wonders and dangers of the world for the first time. Though he has other weaknesses, physical and otherwise, he would openly admit that his memory loss has hurt him more than any of the others.

Fears:

Cain fears that he will one day lose his memories, again. He also fears that he could regain his lost memories, and discover that he was a terrible person.

Background/History:

Cain remembers nothing of his life before passing through the door, but he made a life for himself in Port Washington. He spent the last six months learning everything he could about his new home, making several friends along the way.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
As the eldest child and only son of Adrian and Lilian Eldritch, much has been expected of Cain since the planets aligned on the night of his birth. Erupting violently into the world, basked in the light of a blood moon at the moment of his arrival, it was no surprise when a plethora of ill received omens plagued his early childhood- many of which were spun into a prophecy by Ingrid, the family clairvoyant. It didn't take long for those expectations to be harshly curbed by the untimely and unfortunate demise of his sister, Abel. Blamed for her death, by his parents no less, Cain has become the pariah of the Eldritch clan. All but disowned by his father and held at arm's length by his mother, he quickly grew accustomed to the cold neglect and what could only be called resentment delivered by those who once loved him.

Skills and Abilities

Education:

Cain did not go through any formal education, but he has been tutored by some of the greatest minds in Port Washington.

Non-Educational Skills:

Cain spent much more time on acquiring knowledge than he did acquiring applicable skills, but he has learned a few through his various jobs. He has worked as a barista, bartender, secretary, construction worker, dishwasher, fry cook, street sweeper and a janitor. He didn't spend long at any one of these jobs, but he retained the information provided by his managers quite well. While he hasn't learned anything as extensive as operating in surgery or the inner workings of a car, he has a solid grasp on hard work and knows how to take care of himself.

Magic:

Cain is unaware of the extent of his powers, or why he has them; however, he has been capable of toying with the life force of living beings in the past. He hasn't learned to tap into this ability at will, yet, but it does seem to work from time to time. For example, several months prior a coworker was hit by a drunk driver as they were walking across the street. Cain witnessed the accident and rushed to their aid. Though it was clear they had died, at his touch they were back on their feet in no time. Oddly enough, the drunk driver who had hit them seemed to drop dead at the same moment, even though his injuries were minor. In the end, there was no way to be certain, but Cain believes that he transferred the driver's life force into his friend, causing the driver to die and his friend to come back to life.

In that same vein, when Cain suffers an injury, it heals on reflex. He doesn't know how to activate or deactivate the regeneration factor, but it has proven quite useful. The downside of his healing factor is that when a wound is healed, it is inflicted on someone else. If he scrapes his arm and it heals, a scrape appears on someone else nearby. He has no control over who is injured in the process.

Given his lack of knowledge on the subject, as well as his lack of skill in the area, it is quite possible that he has other powers that he is currently unaware of and unable to tap into.
