Background: After his formal academic schooling was complete, Shinsato became a reservist member of the MCRN so that he could dedicate time to getting his PH.D. in Biology (it is during this time that he also developed considerable skill as a researcher).

Once this militarily funded schooling was complete he went into active service to complete his compulsory military service - CMS - (during which he developed a decent proficiency with various ranged weapons - especially rifles).  Upon completion of his CMS he requested an honourable discharge so that he could pursue a career in biological research.

The leadership skills he'd learned during his time in the MCRN even aided him in being selected as the head scientist and XO of the Zhidao which is currently at port in Eros.  At such a relatively young age, he has already managed to make a name for himself within the scientific community and likely the areas of various governments that pay attention to scientific developments.
