Mirgur Blackmane

There are many colorful characters in the Forgotten Realms. People whose life stories and appearances stand out from the masses. Mirgur Blackmane is one such person, who is obviously of unusual pigmentation, making her literally colorful. Mirgur has Melanism, which is an increase of dark pigment in her skin and fur, resulting in a Bugbear that possesses the ebon beauty of a moonless night. While this unusual coloration made her an oddity to be instantly noticed even among her people, she has turned this aspect of her being into a strength.

Born in the filthy slums of the River District of Athkatla, Mirgur grew up in the highly segregated Goblinoid community that was allowed to reside there. Never fondly looked upon by the so called "goodly" races, even the fellow poor and downtrodden Humans of the River District spat on the Goblinoids. And since Mirgur grew up instantly visually distinct from even other Bugbears, she caught a lot of abuse in her formative years. Which made her as hard as a coffin nail as the years went on. Just from necessity she learned how to fight, whether it was with fists or full on gang-brawls in the back alleys. While being a towering Bugbear gave her the advantage on many one-on-one scraps, it also made her a target for groups of attackers. Hence she learned damn quickly how to sneak around the city unseen. In the shadows and at night, that black fur came in real handy. Soon the Goblins of the district started calling her "Blackmane" in that curious way they name all things, and Mirgur adopted it as a surname. This ability to fight and disappear in the shadows soon brought her work among the slum gangs. Independent operators were always in high demand, and Mirgur was quite poor. Simple burglary, stealing documents and ledgers, breaking legs, and even some wetwork soon became her bread and butter.

By the time she was fourteen she had already acquired quite the reputation. As such she was commissioned by the Shadow Thieves to break into House Selemchant in the Scepter District. Little did she know that it was a setup. They needed someone to discover what magical defenses protected the building, but did not want to sacrifice one of their own. Mirgur was quickly caught, and sent to Spellhold as punishment. The Cowled Wizards were not ones to let crimes against them stand.

For ten, long years she suffered behind those enchanted walls. Every cruel experiment, every test, every long stretch of isolation was a torture that almost broke her. Fights with the other inmates were common, and very few of her martial and stealth skills went unused. But she was not idle that entire time. She needed that many years to discover the layout of the strange building, the guard rotations, the static defenses, the magical wards, the animated defenses, passwords, magical phrases, and all other manner of constructs meant to keep the inmates held within.

But one stormy night she decided that she had enough information. In a plan that involved squeezing her massive frame through the filth-clogged sewer pipes of that wretched prison, she managed to escape from the island and make it to the sea. She would rather die fighting nature than return to that place. For hours she swam in those turbulent, stormy waters, before her endurance gave out.

When she came too, she was on a boat. Apparently, after she had lost consciousness, a passing vessel had found her floating and rescued her. Her joy and gratitude were short lived however, as she noticed the heavy manacles around her wrist and ankles. It quickly became apparent that she had been "rescued" by a slaver ship, who had "acquired" themselves some fresh merchandise without having to pay for it first. They were bound for Chult, where Mirgur was informed that she would be sold into either prostitution, or the gladiator pits. For her part, Mirgur desperately hopes that it is the later...
