History: Maggie had a good, all-American childhood. But, let’s start a little further back. Her parents, Aiden and Emma, both from Ireland, met in college in the U.S. and emigrated there after they finished. Her father, a heart surgeon, worked at building his reputation, becoming very prominent in his field. Her mother was a math professor at the local college.

A few years after they moved to the suburbs, Maggie’s brother, Liam, was born. And a short five years later, Maggie was born. Planning on a large family, Emma was pregnant again in a couple years. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the pregnancy. The baby was stillborn and Emma had to have a hysterectomy, making Liam and Maggie their only children. Not letting their misfortune get them down, they focused their attention on their children’s education.

Maggie and her brother had a comfortable life, not wanting for anything. Both were popular in school and very bright, graduating in the top 5% of their respective classes. Their parents wouldn’t have it any other way. Even with that, Maggie was a cheerleader, with an active social life. They also insisted on college, not that there was any argument. Liam went to Baylor and on to law school. Maggie, the more outdoorsy sibling, wanted to go into science and environmentalism. She was always a fan of camping and hiking and wanted to make sure we always had the wilds to enjoy.  She fell in love with the Cascades on a trip and decided on Oregon State University.

She made a lot of friends after moving to Bend, though she wasn’t sure about a major. She thought about engineering, or forestry so she took classes that would work for those.  On Spring Break in her Freshman year, Maggie and some friends decided to go rock climbing and camping in Colorado.
The trip was going great, lots of fun to be had. But Maggie had this odd feeling of being watched. Nobody else had that feeling. So she ignored it and let her guard down. Midway into the trip, she got separated from her group and was snatched off a trail by a disheveled, terrible smelling man. He pulled her into a cave where he had been living for years. Apparently he was severely mentally and being a mountain lion shifter threw him over the edge. He became a hermit, living in caves and staying away from humans.
As soon as her friends realized she was missing, the found the forest rangers and there was a search. While they knew the hermit was there, he had never harmed anyone, so they didn’t suspect him. It took a few days, but they finally tracked him down and shot him. Though they don’t know why he grabbed her, he had attacked her over and over throughout those days. If he was trying to kill her, he failed. But he did infect her. She spent a week in the hospital, just to be sure that she was fine.
When she came back to school, she lost some friends, but decided those people weren’t worth it anyway. She also decided on Environmental Science with her new feelings of being closer to nature. She got a job with a company that works with construction companies on Sustainability and Environmental concerns over that summer so she could stay in town.
At the construction company’s office, she saw a gorgeous native man. She asked who he was, but didn’t approach him, since they were working. But she noticed him watching her too. Her cat took notice and kept calling him Mate. Before she left for the day, she walked over to him and wrote her number on his hand.
They have been together since. And now are engaged and own a house.
