No one ever brags about being accepted at ETU, not even as a safety school. East Texas is pretty much hard scrabble all over and Pinebox is no different. But if you live in-state the fees are low and there is a surprising amount of scholarship money available.

They offered me two scholarships. One for sports – I pitch a wicked hardball, and one for academics – I’m going to be a forensic anthropologist when I graduate, like Scarpetti in the books. That clinched it. They were basically paying me a living wage to go to school and stay in Texas. Mama’s too poor for this girl to be able to turn that down.
