William 'Bill' Jefferson Phillips
Born 1844. In 1861, at age 17, John joined Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. He was wounded at Gettysburg, and was present at Lee's surrender at the Appomattox Court House in 1865. He left the army with the rank of sergeant, but disillusioned with the bloodshed turned to a life of peace.
After working his apprenticeship as a carpenter he married and settled down in a small town, happy with his place in a local community. When his wife died in childbirth, his world fell apart. Having lost both his loving wife and child, he sold everything and became a drifter, moving from town to town looking for something, anything.
He typically stays a few months, works wherever he can find employment, and then moves on. He will avoid violence if possible, but hes not stupid and is still well able to look after himself.
