The Pardoner can be found in the cathedral, selling indulgences to weary pilgrims. He accepts favors for payment as well and enjoys collecting the woes and aches of citizens who confide in him, fancying himself an enterprising problem solver. He takes up residence in the southern tower of the library, nestled among the books. The Pardoner is easily the size of five men, and dresses in enough finery for all of them, always sporting a flowing jade robe and silk gloves. Unfortunately, he must go pantsless since he has the lower body of a lion and the tail of a scorpion. The sight of him is quite alarming to those who have never seen a monster like him in the flesh. He appears to be the only one openly under the Sun's protection.

He fancies himself a potent lesson of how miracles can go wrong. A cherub's face is carved into the golden sun he wears as a mask, forever smiling, surrounded by the metal rays like a halo. One imagines a man's face at the end of his unnaturally long, fuzzy neck. It, like his tail, bobs merrily with every movement. His taste for riddles makes the worldly suspect he is a sphynx, one wing clipped, so he is forced to make deals with mortals. Some say he is a chimera of the clergy's making. He claims to be a man like any other, motivated by the simple thrill of commerce.
