Background:

Julie grew up in Northaw, Hertfordshire, and had an ordinary middle-class upbringing; not wealthy, but short of nothing except luxuries. She was always independent-minded - not aggressive enough to be called rebellious, but always determined to go her own way whatever others might say. Her parents encouraged this.

She was a tomboy, keen on exploring the local woods (climbing trees, falling in the mud) with a bunch of local boys. At primary school, at the age when boys and girls tended to view each other as diseased monsters, she was one of the rare few accepted by both sides.

Julie grew up to be both smart and passionate about playing sport (particularly hockey, but she was also a keen swimmer). Though she was mostly level-headed, her independent streak got her into trouble from time to time, usually when she accepted a dare she knew she shouldn't have.

She took karate lessons at the local youth centre; she was originally going to sign up for judo classes, but chose karate after a boy taunted that "girls couldn't do karate, they'd burst into tears". She wasn't intimidated at being the only girl in a class of twenty; that just made her more determined. And at no point did she burst into tears :)

She's a student at the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology, taking an HND in Computing. Why CCAT rather than somewhere closer like Hatfield Poly? It gives her a chance to get some independence from her parents while still being near enough for easy trips home.
