Background:
It was 2002, Nigel and his boys were still Arsenal supporters. It was only natural that they go to the FA final to see Chelsea stomp or get stomped, and then pub crawl as celebration or amelioration. They joked on their way into the tube, where they boarded their car in severe contrast to their demeanor at their destination. Joey was gone. Just before they made the platform, Joey vanished. None of them could say where or how he left the car, but he was gone. The consensus, that he linked with a lush, didn't appeal to Nigel but they didn't want to miss the match.
After the match, they took the same line home. Nigel was surprised to see his little brother in the car. With the exception of himself and Colin, the boys were asking his brother where he'd been and calling him Joey. Colin kept asking "Mum" how she was out without her "oh two". Then Nigel's little brother grabbed Artie and ripped his head off.
It wasn't his brother. It wasn't Colin's mum. It wasn't Joey. It wasn't right. It wasn't natural. In that moment, Nigel also knew it needed to be destroyed. But George had smacked it with the motorcycle chain he always wore as a belt; Denny had stabbed it with the switchblade from his boot. Nothing harmed it. Then it came for Nigel.
Nigel didn't think. Everything snapped into sharp focus and Nigel vaulted over the seats as he fended off the fiend's grasping fingers. Grabbing George's motorcycle chain, he turned and snapped the chain like a whip at Cecil's (his little brother was named Cecil) head. Fending the beast off with the chain whip, Nigel plucked the switchblade from Denny's lifeless fingers. The next time the creature lunged Nigel slammed the knife forward. The blade seemed to glow as it drove into the center of Cecil's chest. The glow of the blade spread, devouring Cecil in moments.
As Cecil melted into the floor, everything exploded and Nigel knew no more. Nigel wasn't the only survivor of the tube accident, but he was the only one that refused to believe it was an accident. Of course, there were investigations concluding that "no human agent was responsible for the undercarriage failure". Nigel knew better. He dedicated himself, from then on, to investigating and dealing with 'accidents' such as the one he was involved in. It was his calling, and became his whole life as he obsessed over the differences between 'real' and 'normal'.
