Stephen Langton, the Archbishop of Canterbury, is appointed by the pope but unrecognized by Prince John. After the death of Hubert Walter, Prince John argued with Pope Innocent III over who should be the archbishop of Canterbury. He chose his own candidate, Stephen Langton. The conflict has only escalated since. The pope has slapped an Interdict on England, meaning virtually no church services can be performed. Later King John was excommunicated Stephen Langton, English cardinal whose appointment as archbishop of Canterbury precipitated King John’s quarrel with Pope Innocent III.
