Exile

Name: Gwendolyn Davies
Code Name: Exile
Height: 5'4"
Eyes: Green
Hair: Short, dark brown, usually disheveled

A little more than ten years ago, four youths (two male, two female) were on a hiking expedition along the coast of Cardigan Bay near Aberdyfi in Wales. An unexpected storm kicked up, and the four vanished. After a brief, panicked search, the four were found 36 hours later: cold, wet, and lost, miles away from their last known position, but otherwise unharmed. Gwen was the youngest of those four, at age 11.

The four were national media sensations for a little while, owing mostly to the wild stories they told about their time lost: wild adventures in the fabled lost land of Cantre'r Gwaelod, vicious struggles against a mystical race of lizard-folk, and a lifetime spent coming to terms with being lost in this other world. Forty years of being lost in a mythical land, growing up amidst mythical creatures and the inhabitants of a land long thought vanished. Magic swords and devious sorcerers and eldritch magics. They were briefly held for psychiatric evaluations, of course, and all four were eventually released, their stories being officially dismissed as the product of young imaginations struggling to cope with becoming lost in the sudden storm. Three of the four eventually came to believe that the stories were just that, but Gwendolyn never did.

Gwendolyn had, after all, the only proof that anything unusual had happened that day: a magic sword that would burst into flame when drawn from its ornate leather scabbard, but whose flames never seemed to burn the wielder, provided that wielder was Gwendolyn herself. Still and all, magic swords weren't unheard of, and the official opinion of the Ministry of Powers was that she had chanced upon it in the storm and, as no one else could seem to wield it without harm, Gwen was allowed to keep the sword, provided she used it in service of Queen and Country when called upon to do so.

Gwen was a young hero in Wales for a time, but she went into seclusion on a remote sheep farm owned by her uncles when her friends from that fateful hike managed to turn their stories of Cantre'r Gwaelod into an animated series on national television. From there, Gwendolyn (now just calling herself Gwen) eventually moved to Freedom City, where she lives in a small apartment in Riverside and works as a freelance artist, selling commissioned pieces online, painting, and sporadically updating a webcomic based on her time in Cantre'r Gwaelod.

Appearance: Gwen is about average height, with a slender frame and straight, dark brown hair in a disorganized pixie cut. In civilian gear, she usually favors distressed jeans and loose t-shirts, with an oversized grey hoodie featuring the Welsh flag on the front when the weather is colder. Her hands are hidden inside black leather gloves that she's never seen without. Ever. She usually keeps her sword, Dyrnwyn, in a duffel bag for safekeeping when out and about.

Dyrnwyn is an ancient but well-maintained longsword, and its scabbard is made of leather, decorated with fading illustrations of dragons and other symbols of strength and vitality, and the phrase Ni fydd calon onest yn llosgi, clearly added in more recent times. When it's drawn, Dyrnwyn bursts into flames, but the flames never seem to harm a wielder that the blade finds worthy in the moment. The flames also manifest mystical protections for the wielder. The precise form this takes changes to suit whatever the wielder finds comforting: in Gwen's case, she finds herself wrapped in the sort of armor one might find in really good films of the high fantasy genre, standing taller, stronger, more confident than she seems on her own.
