Nate Thimblewhistle

APPEARANCE
Nate has the elfin, fey-like beauty typical of Halflings (and his family is generally particularly well-favoured). He adds to that a quiet, absolute confidence. Dressed up in the finest finery, he always winds up looking casual and rumpled. Wrapped in muddy homespun he makes it look dashing. Either way, no matter where he is or how out of place he is, it always seems like he belongs.

PERSONALITY
His smile melts hearts, voice fills a room, and his presence commands attention. A word from him can change minds and hearts, but always there's a dangerous gleam in his eye that says he knows exactly what he's capable of and what he can get away with.

BACKSTORY
Almost anywhere there's people, people have a saying: "Can't so much as spit without hitting a Thimblewhistle. And odds are they have it coming." Pretty much anywhere there's people, there's Thimblewhistles hanging about looking for creative ways to part them from their cash. Abernathy's branch of the crooked family tree were carnies, and many's the circus or  market square or travelling troupe with good-looking, fast-talking little folks lurking about the edges, selling the most delicious fried chicken you ever had (secret family recipe) and, while you're there, why hey you look like you could use some of our patented magic health tonic, guaranteed to cure all ailments, only 10 silver a vial.

Abernathy loved his childhood. He loved his family, he loved fried chicken and he loved fleecing rubes. He loved his life. But then great tragedy struck when he was about 16: the absolute worst thing than could happen to a Thimblewshitle, something from which no Thimblewhistle ever recovered.

He got bored.

So off he went into the world, with a quick wit and a ready tongue and heart aching to learn every song and every story and every secret the world had to offer. At first he adventured for the fun and the excitement. And then it was about killing monsters to protect people who couldn't protect themselves. And then, as he grew in stature, he started using his fame and his skills to fight real monsters: political oppression, over-taxation, cruel nobles, war. All across the lands, potentates and dictators feared his name, for in his wake arose unrest and revolution.

He got embroiled in larger and more dangerous plots against larger and more dangerous adversaries, until he ran afoul of an Elder Red Dragon, who wound up destroying his birthplace and his family because of Nate's rabblerousing.

Deciding that his luck (and his joy in adventuring) had finally run out, Nate retired to a quiet corner of the world and kept his head down, having sworn his adventuring days were over.
