Reid Ratte

Faction: Lockman Pirates/Rat-A-Dash Courier Services

Name: Reid Ratte
Occupation: Technie-Rat (Self-Coined), Courier

Species: Rat
Nationality: Space-Faring (Technically Pirace)
Gender: Male
Age: 11 Years

Description: Reid is a younger rat with a bit of a lighter frame to him. His fur is a very light gray that is well kept in spite of what looks to be a bit more rugged choice of clothing. Typically Reid wears a sleeveless jean or leather vest (as seen in the image) with a t-shirt and a more torn up vest over the t-shirt. Reid typically wears jeans or some manner of durable pants with knee padding that can have studs or even not-so-sharpened spikes. Reid typically wears leather gloves for his hands, sometimes fingerless, sometimes not. Down the majority of his left arm are bandage wrapping that seem well-kept, and unsoiled… it’s unknown if this is meant to be a part of the look, or to cover something. The same is present at a point near the tip of his tail, and over the top part of his left ear. He usually keeps a pair of goggles on him that have some electronic functions built in, even though their design makes it look like they lack such.

Size: 2’9”
Weight: 25 lbs
Fur Color: Very Light Gray
Eye Color: Pinkish-Red

Background: Reid Ratte was born not from familial intent, but from the intent to study and advance science, to further the knowledge of the benefits that can be had from combining the notions of technology and biology. Born not on a planet, but on a ship, Reid was one of several ‘lab rats’, being one of the literal rat sort amongst the subjects that were to be the basis for these advances. The project Ratte was part of involved the effects of technology when meshed with the brain of someone with the potential for psionics, as well as testing technology that’d remain persistent and in-tact while biological growth proceeded. Many of the experiments provided results that’d do well in future projects, but the methods to acquire these results, as well as the intended projects of the future, were questionable by a significant margin… even to the sort who themselves can come off as dubious or questionable.

This questionable operation was found out, and intervened upon by a seemingly unlikely party. Where one might suspect local or even solar authorities to step in, it was something very different, though in many cases equally feared and respected. The researchers at the helm of the operation, as well as the ship responsible for it, was raided by a crew of space pirates who had gotten wind of what had been occurring in their space. The raid shut the operation down, but the lead researcher and some of the staff that followed him slipped away amidst the chaos, taking their research with them, but leaving behind most of their resources and the ‘projects’ they had worked on. The pirate crew in question took what they could, for their benefit as well as keeping such from the, ironically, -wrong- hands. In regards to those involved in the projects, they did what they could, trying to find homes where they could, or offer homes where they couldn’t. Reid was one such kid who found a home amongst the friendlier faces.

In time, the young rat’s own curiosity and intent to help found him using his talents to assist his friends, and while he was kept far away from the dangers of raiding, he did what he could to help with what he could about tech… and after some time, even helped with deliveries between ships amongst the crew or their allies, going so far as to create what he has coined ‘Rat-A-Dash Courier Services’, a courier service that took advantage of his talents and put them to use. Alas… his most recent delivery ended with the disappearance of his ship… and that is where the story begins!

Personality: Reid is on the friendlier, if not sometimes odd-ball side. The notion of curiosity governs many of his interactions, and while he isn’t prone to full-on theft, a temporary borrowing for study has happened many-a-times. He’s happy to help, but has a habit of jumping from hyper-focus to sometimes a (sometimes total) lack thereof. In regards to conflict however, there is a tendency to shy-away unless it is in regards to something of a moral basis… he will give way to arguing most of the time, but will try to do -something- if someone is about to get hurt.

Abilities:
1.) Tech Rat: Reid, from a mix of teaching and some of the information ‘implanted’ in his brain, has a very capable talent with technology and the learning of it, as well as the passion to follow up with such.

A.) While the interest and knack is generalized for the most part, there is a very clear specialization Reid takes with technology that he can ‘connect’ with, specifically computers and robotics.

2.) Telepathy: Reid was born with a fairly promising potential for telepathy, a basis that was experimented with heavily. Reid has quite a high aptitude for telepathic talents, though there are many questions as to what effects the implants might have on such.

3.) Project W-13: As part of the projects to test what can be done with the cybernetic in synergy with developing brain matter, Reid has bits of prototypical tech throughout his brain, which have thus far primarily served to significantly enhance brain functionality. To what has been observed, the implants seem to react and adjust as the brain develops and grows, and have a very slow form of self-repair based on the mineral in-take from the body.

Weaknesses:
1.) Phobic: Related to some of the events of Reid’s past, there are a few phobias that the rat has, some alluding to the events of his time in the ‘lab’. [Autophobia, Borderline Iatrophobia, and Borderline Nosocomephobia] (Fear of being Alone, Fear of Doctors, and Fear of Hospitals (Moreso laboratories in this case.) [While he can, with a good bit of time and a friendly doctor, eventually trust such, it can be a hassle to get the rat to go to the doctor, and almost impossible if it’s to one he doesn’t know.]

2.) ‘Glitchy’: While the implants in Reid’s brain are impressive, they are still prototypes, and given their presence in the brain, can lead to some ‘glitches’ in the system per say, occasionally causing odd sensory side-effects, as well as the occasional accidental ‘broadcast’ of thoughts.

A.) Given that Reid’s biology has grown accustomed to and adaptive of the technology in his brain, anything that would render it non-functional poses significant hindrances, and in some cases, significant danger.

B.) While Reid’s implants act as means of enhancing brain function, there are times when this enhancement experiences a momentary and unaccounted for flux. In cases like this, the side-effect is usually short-lived, but not typically all too helpful, such as a flux in sensory intake where sensory processing is simply not prepared for the amount of information.

3.) Golden Heart, Paper Brawn: While Reid will give way to shouting or significantly aggressive attitudes sometimes, when it comes to real threats or the possibility of harm to friends, the rat will get involved. Sadly, without the assistance of technology, the lack of mass or physical strength make him barely a threat in such regards, even sometimes to those of his own size.

Weapons:
Reid isn’t supposed to get himself involved with fights, and his work as a courier is generally avoidant of such, but sometimes a hassle comes about, and it can’t hurt to be prepared.

1.) Non-Lethal Gadgetry: Reid has some gadgetry designated to self-defense, which predominantly involve non-lethal incapacitation.
2.) ‘Pew-Pew’: Despite the childish nickname, this is Reid’s one actual dedicated weapon of self-defense. A form of hand-held shock blaster, it is ‘shockingly’ effective (pun 100% intended), and can pack a wallop, though it’s almost always likely to be set to a non-lethal setting.

Equipment:

1.) Electronics: Given Reid’s mild obsession with most things electronic, he has a variety of small electronic devices. Some for tinkering, some for usage. Oddly enough, the more self-made ones, while modern in function, have a sort of ‘out-dated’ look to them.

2.) Robotics: Reid loves studying robots, making robots, and even sometimes talking to robots! It’s rare to not see him with one of his ‘friends’, though typically this list is fairly consistent. Robot parts don’t usually grow on trees after all!

A.) Smiley: Smiley is a Ratte-Model 44a, which Reid named coined mostly because the term sounded cool. The robot is the brawn and sometimes the guard of Reid’s courier activities, acting as a very durable and hefty bot for delivering and or transporting heavier cargo for delivery purposes. Also tends to act as a bit of a mobile storage.

B.) Binary/Bin-Bin: While Ratte isn’t friendless, Binary takes up one of the spots Ratte has for ‘Best Friends’, being his first and most worked on robot. Binary is a drone that was made specifically for Ratte to connect to, in this case, telepathically. The implants in Ratte permit him a means of communicating with compatible technology, Binary permits a means of translating that to a broader range. Binary has other utilitarian functions and programs to it as well, but is otherwise effectively a ‘friend-bot’ to Ratte, and it’s rare to see one without the other.

Snacks: Nobody is sure how or why, but Ratte almost always has a snack to offer, whether it was in his pockets, in the storage, in that compartment, being held by Smiley or Binary, or just… happened to be held by his tail… if it’s peckishness, and it’d make sense of course, Ratte’s got a snack.

Title: Dash-Rat, Courier Rat, Tech-Rat, Pack-Rat [Known for hoarding things in personal spaces.]
Born: Reid was born of artificial means aboard a ship dedicated to matters of science, even the dubious sort of science.

Quote: ‘Beep boop, quote requested? Beep boop, buzzzzzrt. Hehehe. Quote in robot!’
Name Means: Rat. Literally. Sort of named himself such…

Strength: Strength-wise Reid is a bit of a wimp, relying on Smiley or other assistance for jobs that require a lot of muscle.
Intelligence: Reid’s biggest strong suit is a very keen mind. He is incredibly intelligent, natural smarts being brought very much further with the involvement of the implants in his brain enhancing brain function, as well as acting as additional ‘data storage’. Reid has dedicated most of this intellect and incredible storage of ‘data’ to his passions for technology.
Endurance: Reid works hard and plays hard, with the energy of a hyperactive kid who either can’t stop to talk, or can’t stop talking. Durability-wise… he has the will to stay standing, but not always the physical capacity to do so.
Agility: Reid has an incredible amount of natural agility thanks to being the rat he is, but this has been improved upon to an extent based on the matter of his time spent around pirate friends! Lots to learn from some of the more roguish sort!
Awareness: Reid’s awareness is almost like a on-and-off switch, going from decently aware of his surroundings and perceiving things with decent clarity, to practically ignoring all but the most direct attention grabbing things when he’s hyper-focused or deep in thought, going to the extent that he can, and has walked right into walls, people, and even over the edge into a pool once!
Charisma: Reid can come across as a bit of a polite odd-ball, but when it comes to bossing people around, or asserting himself… it isn’t quite his strong suit.
Willpower: Reid possesses a definite will to him, especially in regards to helping his friends or pursuing his passions, but this can sometimes fall apart entirely when it comes to the things he fears.
