Jane Porter is an anthropologist, like her father. Professor Archimedes Q. Porter had intended to travel to Africa to conduct a year-long survey of the tribes in the Congo, but the opening up of a new frontier in space and the reported discovery of alien humanoid races living on the planet Mars had decided the University to redirect him skyward instead. Jane has traveled with her father as part of his expedition to document the languages and living habits of the Martians.
