Yagyu no Hayabusa Jubei

Needs, Wants, Triggers

What I want from games are action, intrigue, and romance.

What I don't want is for RP to be a competition where players spend their time trying to get one up or over on the other people in threads.  I don't like scenes where characters serve as the enemies for each other.

I do like lots of NPCs to enliven scenes, including the enemies that they will overcome together.

Structurally, I see the play as a series of interlocked team-ups between characters, in which no one needs to be there for every scene but the scenes build towards a resolution as fits the needs and wants of the players.

Background

Yagyu no Hayabusa Jubei (Yagyu no Hayabusa is his family name, with Jubei being his given name,) was born into the leadership of the Hayabusa Clan.  The clan is part of the shadow government that exists in Japan, a ninja clan that, in turn, controls the Seven Hells yakuza organization.  (He is not, himself, a yakuza.  They are expendable thugs.  He is a ninja and samurai.)

He was trained in both traditional and modern ways.  Excellent schooling (private with expensive tutors flown in from around the world) was supplemented by martial arts, ninjitsu, and leadership.

When he was thirteen, though, he started showing unusual powers.  He’d always been an apt student, but he started doing strange and impressive feats, like using wooden swords to cut - not smash, cut - ribbons of silk.  He was examined by Taoist shamans who said he had great magical ability.  Medical testing confirmed he was a metahuman.

There was a great deal of discussion about what to do.  Some clan members thought that he should be not ever become a clan leader, seeing his metahumanity as an insult to the traditions of the clan.  Others thought that a metahuman leader would make their clan more powerful.  As they dithered, Jubei continued his training.  As they dithered, he became an effective field commander of ninja, creating a loyal body of warriors from both the ninja and yakuza sides of the clan.  They dithered for years.

They dithered so much that they didn’t even know that Jubei had taken over the clan until he told them.  The ones that opposed him had been divested of their financial interests in clan business and were therefore at the mercy of the clan.  Those who supported him saw their shares, wealth, and power increase.

There was a bit of blood, but even without his metahuman abilities, Jubei was the most talented warrior of his generation (and it was a generation that did not lack talented warriors.)  With his meta abilities, it was a lopsided bloodbath.

His Japanese possessions secure, Jubei has decided to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Traits

* Japanese martial arts expert.

* Chi enhancement.  By turning his chi inward, he can do all the physical stunts typical of cinematic martial artists - running up walls, jumping through the trees, cutting almost anything with a sword or breaking almost anything with his unarmed blows, taking blows that would kill most people, and accelerated healing.  He can empower weapons, though only muscle powered ones.  No magic guns, but shuriken and bows?  Absolutely.

* Ninjitsu.  Not the martial end, which is addressed elsewhere, but the other things it takes to be a ninja: freerunning, disguise, escape, concealment, tactics, infiltration and exfiltration.

* Has a way of getting what he wants socially.

* Ninja "magic."  By turning his chi outward, he can... I mean, he's basically a Jedi, okay?  Telekinesis, mind tricks, clairvoyance, psychic defenses, concealment, and short-range teleportation (a few meters.)

* Hayabusa Clan Leader.  He leads the clan.  The clan is one of the richest, most powerful clans in Japan, not just because of their immense holdings but their control of the Seven Hells yakuza.  Not to mention that they’re also ninja.  However, this trait is about the prestige, wealth, and status afforded people whose finances are so vast and complex that calculating their worth is impossible.  Not to mention the simple fact he has literally dozens of thugs and assassins on speed dial.
