History: Pre-War

Steve comes from a Massachusetts newspaper family and was a member of the new Massachusetts National Guard at age 18 while beginning studies at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1917 he was quickly commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to an infantry platoon in the 26th Yankee NG Inf Division. After reaching France he became a 1st Lieutenant and company G-2 (intelligence officer) then was promoted captain and became the battalion G-2.

Great War activities

Steve was Intelligence officer (Captain) of an Infantry Battalion. He took command after the command staff was killed in an artillery barrage while he was out of the bunker gathering maps. Realizing an enemy push was coming he began issuing defensive orders aqnd directed his unit for one week until chain of command re-established. The high command was impressed by his initiative and marked him for promotion.


Post-war activities

Activities unknown 1919-1921. Suffice it to say it was an interesting time to travel the world, see strange new places, meeting exotic people and killing them.

He served under William J. Burns in Bureau of Investigations 1921-24. It was necessary to leave the agency after J Edgar Hoover took over. Hoover didn't like Steve's background; wanting cops and accountants.

He set up Cable's Private Investigators Business in The City in 1924. The business tends to handle wealthy client's in general; recovery a specialty: persons or objects.
