Jimmy Wood works as a general assignment reporter for The New York Post, an afternoon daily. He's divorced -- just settling into his second year of separation -- and a father; his preteen daughter, Catherine (or Cat), lives with his ex-wife, Stacey.
Unfortunately, he hasn't taken the separation that well. While Jimmy is good at his job -- especially interested in covering local history and uncovering corruption and misuse of power (as a reporter, he knows pretty much everyone, or is one phone call away) -- he's largely a loner otherwise. Most nights, he drinks at Jimmy's Corner, a boxing bar not far from the newspaper office -- or by himself at home on the Lower East Side. Lately, he's been having bad dreams. Very bad dreams.
