The dust lies thick and deep on the barren swathe of plain known locally as the Dagger Wastes. Swirling winds occasionally drive the gritty surface into great storms that grate across the land, sucking the life from those foolish enough to be caught in the open. Rain seldom falls here, but at night the scorching heat of the day turns to bone-chilling cold. Small communities dot the land here and there, irrigated farmsteads providing the means for the inhibitants to eke out a miserable living in this harsh, unforgiving place. Beyond these pockets of civilisation, wild packs of fell beasts or warlike humanoids stalk the Wastes, looking for their next kill, or an unsuspecting captive.

But in the frontier town of Dustbowl, squatting in a dry valley to the south of the jagged escarpments of the Razor Hills, such matters are of little concern. For here the armies of the invaders have stood watching over their borders for nigh-on seventy years, while disenfranchised rebel forces gather in the lands to the west. And now their long vigil of indifference is at an end.

The time has come, and they gather in force to end seven decades of border skirmishes with the long-exiled peoples who once ruled the eastern kingdoms. Soon they will march, and with vastly superior technology they will at last begin the thousand-mile push to the west coast, driving all before them and claiming as their own the unconquered region known as Outland. For while the invaders are few in number, each of them knows that their advanced weaponry and tactics will ensure swift victory in the days to come.

And the Wastes will flow with the blood of a thousand nations...
