Elgast is a gangly boy with dark hair and eyes and pale skin. He walks with a limp due to an old injury to his left leg. His hair is short and clean, but usually messy.

Background
The only child of Laeta ex Jerbiton, Elgast was born early in 995 in the Waldherz covenant. As Elgast grew up he accompanied his mother on her trips into the Black Forest collecting unusual plants for her garden. But more than anything, he loved spending time in her library. Early on his gift with languages was noticed and he was taught several languages and dialects.

In 1004, at the start of the Schism War, Waldherz fell. Hunted by one of her former sodales, Laeta ex Jerbiton fled into the Black Forest with her son. Knowing that they were being followed, Laeta called on the Forest itself to save her son. While Elgast vanished into a Forest regio, Leata turned and faced her hunter, Timor ex Diedne. She fought him to the death, but just before she died, she saw two Flambeau mages arrive to kill Timor.

Elgast wandered deep in a Magic regio protected by his mother's final gift. He was safe but lost and alone. As he continued trying to find his way out of the forest, he noticed an owl watching him. From time to time the owl would leave him a rabbit for dinner. In exchange, he would clean and cook the rabbit and share the meal with the owl. After a few months, the owl introduced himself to Elgast. Aldwyn and Elgast quickly become close friends. Together they found a way for Elgast to escape the Forest. Back in the mortal world, Elgast quickly discovered that everyone he knew was long dead. Almost two hundred years had passed in the world during the months he had wandered in the Forest.

As he left the Forest regio, Elgast saw his mother's ghost for the first time. Since then he has encountered her from time to time. She continues to watch over Elgast and protect him. As Elgast grows, she may begin to take more direct action.

Elgast did his best to work and beg to support himself. Aldwyn hunted for them sometimes. The word about the ghost boy of the Forest eventually reached Manius ex Bonisagus. Shortly thereafter, Noll found Elgast and the story begins.
