Twilight of Asteria
A thousand years ago, in the aftermath of global war, the ancestors looked to the stars for a new home. The technological advancements that lead to the nuclear holocaust had also left them with the means to transform a Gaianoid (earth-like) planet to sustain life. Twelve suitable planets were identified and the survivors divided among twelve expedition ships and set off to establish their new home worlds.

There was no certainty of success, but they had no choice. Gaia—the Old Earth—had been mortally wounded. It would be only a matter of time until she collapsed on herself. The journey was long and dangerous. With the population in stasis, no one would be awake to handle problems along the way. No means of communication existed among the ships either. Each group was on its own.

One ship found its destination, a planet they named Asteria. A small team awoke to begin the year-long Gaiaforming process. Once complete, the team landed the ship on the surface and tested the new atmosphere. It worked. They woke the rest of the population and began building a new society.

Centuries passed. Asteria grew. People almost forgot the near devastation of their forebears. Until one day, devastation resurfaced.

While the Gaiaforming had worked, they could not fix the sun. When the ancestors left Gaia, no one anticipated a dying star. Asteria's scientists set to work to save the planet. There was no time to evacuate an entire planet and no other nearby system with a Gaianoid planet. Instead, they developed a planetary shield.

Harnessing one of Asteria's two moons as a platform, they erected an energy field that would absorb the dangerous radiation from the star's shedding corona. After the Great Impact, Asteria would have been too far away from the now dwarf star to sustain life. The shield would use the absorbed energy to hurl the planet towards the sun, then correct its orbit.

Almost miraculously, it worked. The one moon was lost in the process, but Asteria was safe…at one grave cost: She was tidally locked to her star.

The side which came to only face the sun became so hot that water dried up. Farmland became desert. People could not live constantly in such intense heat without assistance, and they had not prepared for this. The side which came to only face away from the sun became so cold that most water froze. Forests became tundra and glacier. The population did not have the insulation to survive.

Panic broke out. The vast majority of the population of Asteria fled with what they could carry towards the ribbon of inhabitable land, called the Twilight. Not many made it in time. Those who did found themselves scrounging for food and sleeping in gutters. The sun stood still just beyond the horizon. The remaining moon was the only visual means of measuring the passage of time.

A hundred years later, everything has changed. Entire empires collapsed. Economies disappeared. The powerful became powerless and the weak became strong. Several factions arose in the Twilight, maintaining their borders and fighting for resources.

You are just one of many a scavenger. Or are you?
