Herius Verius Viator

Herius Verius Viator is a legate serving under the rebel Carausius, and is a man with a storied career, filled with bloody rumors and contradictory accounts.

Allegedly born in Egypt to a commander of the native militia, he enlisted in the legions at a young age, seeing action against Palmyrene rebels and the Sasanians. By some accounts, he was assigned to Roman embassies and expeditions to the distant east, gaining the nickname 'Viator' or 'Traveller' as a result.

He rose to fame and fortune as the man who allegedly struck down Emperor Carinus, ending his reign. He was promoted to a position of prefect, and was stationed in Britannia with the Legio VI Victrix. Upon the declaration of Carausius' rebellion, Viator slaughtered his legate and many of his fellow prefects to take control of his legion and declare for Carausius, who promptly named the upstart as legate of the legion.

Some in the army whisper that he used black magic or poisons to slay his fellow officers, and that he consorts with dark and twisted gods of Egypt and the east. A few of the wilder rumors suggest that he is descended from the pharaohs of old Egypt, and that he dreams of making himself an emperor in his own right.

Despite those rumors, Viator seems content to serve Carausius, and has fought well for him throughout his revolt.
