Manuel Santiago grew up close to the wrong side of town.  As gangs started moving in towards his neighborhood, his parents decided to find a way to help their son defend himself.  As luck would have it, his neighbor ran a kickboxing school.  Manuel learned quickly and became a rising star in the world of kickboxing.  When his parents died in a car accident, his neighbor took him in and became his manager.

As Manuel started winning fights and rising up the rankings, he attracted the attention of the gang, The Black Bands, who was the reason his parents got him into kickboxing.  When he refused to throw a fight, the gang took matters into their own hands.  Three days later, Manuel found himself in a car accident.

Manuel was not sure where he was but felt that a large amount of time had passed.  When he finally awoke, he found himself strapped to some weird table.  His manager was there and began to fill in the blanks.  After the crash, his manager had found him and brought him to the only person he knew could help him.  The lab he was in was run by his manager's brother, a scientist that was experimenting with nanobot technology.  It took a long while for Manuel to accept that he would never move again without a super experimental treatment that he might survive.

After several months, Manuel was finally standing but not able to move.  It was then that tragedy struck again, this time his manager being caught by the Black Bands.  The scientist moved the two of them around to different places as Manuel continued to assimilate the nanobot technology into his own body.  The treatments finally ended and Manuel was made new, no longer just a man but a cyborg.  The scientist informed him that he had reached the limits of his ability to do anything more and encouraged him to go out and find others who could help him.  He suggested that he honor his deceased parents and manager by fighting against crime and that there were others out there who could help him fight crime and develop himself further.
