Kyoshi Chekov was born the son of a Russian mid-level manager for OTEC (Ocean Technology & Energy Corporation) and his Japanese wife (who was working as his bodyguard). When Ky was 9, his parents were killed in a terrorist attack and so was raised by a friend of his mother by the name of Elias Quinn. Ky and Elias' daughter Melia became good friends (and eventually lovers) and always had a friendly competition going on between them.

While growing up in the Quinn household, Ky took a path towards being a paramedic. As they still lived and worked at one of OTEC's arcologies in the middle of the ocean, it only made sense that he become a rescue diver and paramedic. Melia served on the same rescue team, but more of a security asset than direct medic (although she had some first responder training).

During a recent evac of an OTEC deep water research facility, Kyoshi found himself and Melia wrapped in the tentacles of a giant squid. Their team was able to pull them out, but it changed Ky and Melia's relationship for a while with her blaming him for not protecting her like he said he would.

Unable to remain on the team because of his mental state, Ky left for new territories. Along the way, he got a GloTat of an octopus over his left eye where the tentacles reached back into his hair and moved anytime his hair did. After arriving in Night City, he picked up the handle of Doc Oc and has been trying to redeem himself (in his mind) since. Even a brief, friendly encounter with Melia, now working as a bodyguard for hire, hasn't shaken him out of his thoughts of the past.
