However, the discovery of a curious manuscript in the college library lured him into a rash visit to Arkham; he has never revealed its details, but the result was that he returned a prematurely older man with a grim determination to prepare himself to resist the dangers of evil occult influences. He left his comfortable position in New Haven and has traveled about the colonies in search of hidden knowledge. A modest inheritance has permitted him to pursue this life without a formal position, though he sometimes serves as a teacher to less-informed persons who share his interests, with or without demanding a fee, depending on the means of his pupils.
