Kirby Elliott is Charles’ youngest child (of 3) and only son. In his late 30s, Kirby - or “Bunny”, the childhood nickname that Charles still uses - is an avid hunter and outdoorsman whose dour, dark personality makes his asocial tendencies a welcome relief at times. After spending a few years in the military and a failed marriage with Alex, he saw it as his duty to return home and help run the farm. Whether his father had the same expectation is unclear, but there’s an undercurrent of resentment and frustration in their relationship that can explode at times of great stress.

Kirby and Denny make for good companions in some ways: they share similar upbringings and both can get by with little communication. On a deeper level, though, they just aren’t really a good fit. Where Denny is polite and gentle, however, Kirby is moody and often mouthy. Kirby also resents Denny for, in his view, supplanting him as the prodigal son.

Kirby and Kara don’t have much of a relationship yet. He sees her youth and diplomatic nature as major weaknesses, and refuses to see past that assessment, no matter how many times she helps protect the group.

Kirby and Alex have a complicated relationship. He is still powerfully attracted to her and not-so-secretly hopes they’ll get back together, but the eternal problem is that he refuses to see her as the independent, resilient woman that she is. Kirby is often patronizing or irritable whenever he talks to her, and in some ways, still treats her as though she is his wife (though obviously not in a healthy way).
