Tall, stooped, bearded, with peering nearsighted expression, but inwardly quite shrewd and alert. His outwardly vague manner masks a dry wit and a sharp awareness of Marland politics.

 He tends to avoid the wilder aspects of European elite social life. However, he feels a dynastic duty to eventually find a truly suitable wife and beget heirs.

He does not proclaim it but he has committed his life to winning the premiership and reviving his father's now abandoned policies. Unlike the Liberals, he is not committed to Indigene autonomy, though he tends to think they do better in their traditional lifestyle than when they try to imitate European ways. However, as a devout Anglican he does support mission work among them, as well as among the non-Anglican Europeans, especially the Methodists and other Dissenters.
