Sean Geoghan

Sean Geoghan, or Seani to his friends and family is the twenty-one year old youngest son of Gerry and Mary Geoghan.

Seani is the baby of the family, being twelve years younger than his sister Niahm and fourteen younger than his brother Patrick.  Often referred to by his family as 'Baby Seani', even well into his teens Sean has felt in the shadow of his parents and siblings, feeling almost like an only child, despite his family doting on him.

Sean almost certainly was a 'surprise' to Gerry and Mary but nevertheless he was adored by his parents as a 'late gift'.  If Paddy was 'the number one son and one day man of the house' and Niamh was 'Daddy's Princess', then little baby Seani was 'Mammy's Boy'.  Indeed, Mary showered affection on the child, kept him close as the other siblings entered their teenage years.  It was a little baby to love and cherish all over again.

Growing up Sean nevertheless grew up close to his mother's apron strings and as he grew up, a fiercer protector of his mother never existed.  As he grit his teeth and bit his tongue at every 'baby Seani' comment from his mother his arms were wide open with love for her as the baby became a boy became a man.

Everyone in the family knew that Paddy was the one Dad talked to, and Niamh the one Dad doted on.  Sean grew up 'knowing' he was loved but just for once hoped that his Dad would notice him.

By the time he was eight he was pulling on the gloves and leather hit the bags.  Every day if he could.  Dad was a boxer and a handy fella, and one day Seani would be.  Every Saturday his Dad would take him down to Donaghy's and Seani would box.  It was the one time of the week when he was the focus of his Dad's attention.  Paddy had packed up by then, having to work and it was just the pair of them.

Gerry would put on the pads and Seani would strike them.  Harder and harder and faster and faster the fists rained on his Dad's palms.  Now and again, a 'not bad' from his Dad would fill his heart with joy.  A few simple words enough to live off for weeks on end.

A special treat would be when his Dad would put the gloves on and go a round or two with old Donaghy.  Whispers would be said about how 'Gerry Geoghan has some fists' or that 'if only he'd trained, he was good enough'.  In Sean's eyes though he saw a furious fighter with a killer finish.

Then, as Sean reached his teens he saw the gaps in technique.  Power over finesse.  And then that terrible moment that enters a teenage boy's mind, and can never be shaken - 'I can beat my Dad...'

From that moment on Seani trained and trained.  Every day after school, every weekend.  Old Donaghy waiving the fees just to have the lad in and develop.  Junior competitions followed and so did wins.  Win after win after win and people started to talk in tones of him maybe, just maybe going pro.

A week before his father's unexpected demise Seani Geoghan did it!  Winning the Shaddingham and County Amateur Boxing Association Featherweight Title stopping another local lad Greg Patten in the third with the left hook no one saw until it landed.

Although Sean felt validated, this first taste of success has emboldened him to carry on, to try his best, to see how far he can go.  Anything to get noticed, and not to be the baby anymore.

Seani is approximately 5'8" and lean.  By the standards of the time he would be considered muscular and toned although all his strength comes from core lifting and strengthening.  He has dark blue eyes and wears his brown hair short in a crew cut.  He is currently trying to grow a beard, now that he has won his first local title it is time for him to 'become a man'.  His Mam thinks he is just being silly....

Sean still lives at home with his parents, and like his sister did well at school.  Good enough to land a job at a local mechanics warehouse in the stores where he works full time.

Sean quite likes his job, he's left alone to do it, and the walk to and from the warehouse passes the club so he can train on the way and on the way back from work if he wants.

Sean doesn't have a girlfriend having not really shown any interest in girls to date.  He's considered a likeable, socialable enough lad when one talks to him.  But most of the time he keeps himself to himself, really only considering the people at work and those at the club as friends.  Well, acquaintances really...

Sean is a quiet man who usually thinks before talking.  He has a dry sense of humour and is largely considered shy rather aloof or taciturn.  Occasionally he will come out of his shell, the rare times he goes for a drink but really his whole life revolves around boxing and finally stepping out into the world no longer the baby...
