Dungeons and Dragons: A Chain of Chaos

All legends come to an end.

Each of you is a hero of the age. A name known to all, whose deeds cannot be easily counted, even by the most dutiful scribe of history. You all come from very different origins, but you all arrived to the same place: saviors of the world many times over, and guardians of the peace.

Together, the four of you defeated Vorkalth of Many Shadows, despite legend and prophecy declaring him a cyclical aspect of destruction in the world. With the breaking of the millennial chain, all thought that the world would settle into an unprecedented era of prosperity and tranquility. Even the omnipresent monsters that reside in the dark places of the world began to appear less frequently. But as with all things, there is a price to pay when the natural balance is disturbed. Despite your standing against Vorkalth of Many Shadows, it was unbeknownst to you that his presence balanced out the natural forces in your reality.

The Weave began to tear itself apart, and all manner of cataclysm rocked your world. Earthquakes, tsunamis, rents in reality where all manner of horror spilled through. The sky burned with purple flame over the eastern continent. All thought that this was the end. But you rallied what people you could, and through just as much luck as skill, you discovered the source of the ruination. Your realm was home to a Shard of Creation. A broken fragment of the echo of the birth of the multiverse. It was the cornerstone of your entire world, and had been resonating with the natural ebb and flow of primal forces since the gods forged your planet.

With the very walls of the earth shaking all around you, your group delved into the Underdark to find the Shard of Creation. Unimaginably, the Shard was wedged further than that into the crust of the world.  Dodging lava flows and creatures that mortal eyes had never before beheld, you found the fragment. The mortal tongue cannot accurately describe the object they beheld. It was always beyond mortal ken. As such, it was only by invoking a rite which called for aid from the gods themselves were they able to remove the offending Shard. But that tormented the Weave even further. However, in gratitude for returning something that was never supposed to be lost, Boccob himself stepped in to restore balance to the world.

This act was no mere repayment, for  the Lord of All Magic had an agenda. Seeing useful pawns in the game of divine machinations, Baccob sent  his servant Zagyg the Mad to instruct you of the cost of his intervention. At his behest for five years, the group would have to undergo grand tasks for the  the Archimage of the Gods. And do you did. Strange, wild, and otherwise impossible realms were made known to you. Knowledge and artifacts of all kinds did you retrieve for Baccob. And then the five years were up, and you were free to pursue your own agendas once again.

The upheaval of the Shard of Creation and your subsequent disappearance left the world in chaos. Only your strength and knowledge could set things right once again. Through blood, sweat, and tears, did the kingdoms get returned to peace and prosperity. But that was the end of it.

There are no more mountains to climb, no more dangers lurking in the shadows.

And you are starting to become the problem.

You are a victim of your own success. Oh sure, every once and a while, some challenger from higher planes comes down to test your mettle, just because your legend had spread to other spheres. Which puts the innocents of your kingdoms in danger. And factions have arisen from among the people that speak against you. For those of you who rule, they say your position is maintained by being a tyranny based on your sheer power. Utilizing your power to quell this talk would only prove their point.

And that is where we begin. With your own victories bringing you to the edge of defeat.
