Emrys works as an information-broker.  He gets paid for intelligence on people, businesses, locations, politics, or whatever else a client needs.  Before embarking on that career path, however, Emrys was a slave to a Duergar family in the Underdark city of Skullport.  Emrys as a child prayed everyday to the gods for deliverance... and it never came, despite his desperate pleas to the heavens.  He never lost hope in spite of the seeming dispassionate indifference of the gods... and one day hope arrived.  In a vision, a strange amorphous creature impressed upon the thoughts of Emrys and taught him a new language... Deep Speech.  Through this language, Emrys was revealed a path out of the bonds of slavery, if he served as this creature's conduit to the material realm.  Emrys agreed and devoted his life to allowing his patron to see Faerun through his eyes and actions.  Escaping Skullport during a riot, Emrys broke free to the surface in Waterdeep where he took a job as a confidential source for someone believed to be a member of the Knights of the Shield.  Emrys became very good at observing people, manipulating them, and squeezing information out of the most unlikely of sources, all with the help of his patron who finds Faerun humanoids very amusing to toy with.
