[DnD 5e] In the Shadow of the Gallows

You are a "guest" of infamous and greatly feared Halstenberg Gaol. It does not matter how you came to this pit of despair, all that matters is that you are all united by one, simple, inescapable fact.

You are all going to die.

Fresh prisoners are always gathered in large groups from smaller local jails, before being sent to the nightmare realm. For three days, you have been deprived water and food. This is a simple, pragmatic choice by your jailers. Why waste good coin to water and feed the condemned? The Gaol is very concerned with proper legal procedure, and the three days are usually spent taking proper records of the prisoners, allowing the prisoners access to spiritual counsel, and then finally, execution by hanging.

Dawn and the noose are only a few hours away, and then it is all over.

You could be a vile blaggard that has finally been caught for your abominable crimes. You could be completely innocent, framed by enemies, or simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Yet still, you could be a member of an outlawed faith, waiting to die for your religion. Or worse of all, you could be a disgusting Witch, lucky enough to be captured by civil authorities instead of the Inquisition, who would have burned you to death on the spot.

The reasons for your current stay in the gaol are unimportant to your jailers, who are professional civil servants, and cannot be bribed, threatened, or given to bouts of empathy for any injustice that might befall you.

You. Are. Going. To. Die.

But maybe...just maybe...fate might give you a way to escape the shadow of the gallows. For as you lay awake in your cell, counting down the hours to your execution, a mysterious figure in a black hood and a blank white mask approaches your cell door...
