Superboy

Name: Jon Kent
Aliases: Superboy
Age: 20
Physical Description: At 5’11”, Jon isn’t particularly tall but is fit and it shows.  By look, he would appear to be about 170 pounds, though he actually weighs well over 200, his muscles far denser than the average human, in no small part because he is only half human.  However, his weight fluctuates fairly rapidly, growing bulkier and leaner in the course of a day or two, depending on how much sun he's gotten.  He also tends to take on a more pallid tone when he's been denied the sun for more than a few days and has grown almost bone white after three or four days under the nuclear clouds.  His cheeks were hollow and his skin ashen dry during that experiment, though a few hours above the clouds in the rays of the yellow sun restored him to a healthy glow.

He's found a number of t-shirts with the 'S' symbol of his father, the Kryptonian symbol for hope, as well as a 'costume' he found on a mannequin that he occasionally wears when he goes up to above the clouds to watch the sunrise.  Its cape is tattered but it makes him feel a little more hopeful himself though he wouldn't feel confident enough to wear it in front of anyone until he feels he's earned the right.

Should he ever adopt a secret identity, he figures he'll wear frumpy clothes to hide his muscles and glasses, a trick he read about in an old comic book.  He's actually tried the look in front of a mirror, the result leaving him looking somewhat ordinary.  He hasn't had a reason to adopt that look beyond 'pretend' and probably won't

Biography/History:  His mother wouldn’t say much about the man who had fathered her child some 20 years ago, except to say he was a good man, and a lonely one.  It seemed she had loved him, but he hadn’t loved her, at least not in the way she seemed to have wanted or needed.  Still, she never said a bad thing about him, even when Jon would complain growing up about how any man who walked away from his responsibilities wasn’t much of a man at all.

He was raised by her and his Uncle in a small town in the middle of the country where his uncle worked repairing robots in a vertical farm and his mother worked as an administrative assistant or something like that, Jon hadn't really understood what she did other than it involved lots of 'paperwork' and long nights.  He had an ordinary enough life, played football, did well in school and like a lot of other small town kids, dreamed of moving to Metropolis or Gotham or some other big city.  He never got that chance, at least not until after The End of the World.

No one knew what had caused it, but on May 29th, the missiles held in silos outside his small town launched.  At least, most launched.  One simply exploded underground.  In an instant, most of the town he’d grown up in had sunk into the crater left behind from the blast.  Those not killed instantly were burned by radiation, dying within hours, if not minutes.  Jon, on the other hand, was affected in a different way.  Something about the radiation unlocked dormant genes in his body, both changing him and protecting him.

It took him weeks to dig himself out of the rubble, maybe months.  He was strong but not strong enough.  The nuclear radiation triggered his dormant genes and those genes kept him alive, but he was a creature of solar energy and it would take him a year before he could fly above the clouds and bask in the sun.

It would take another for him to come to grips with his new and often chaotic powers.  Sometimes, his vision would blur and he'd release all of his cosmic energy in a single moment (it would take days to regain enough strength to reach the sky again).  Once he sneezed and blew over the shack he'd built on the foundation of his old home.  Once he flew into a mountain because the world had turned translucent and he couldn't see it, only the land beyond.

He has a semblance of control now.  The world still sounded too loud, even the wind.  It still shifted into see-through tones of black and white.  But, he learned not to throw himself into the air by accident or burn down what little remained of his new home.  He spent another six months getting a finer handle on his eyes and ears, doing what his uncle always said was good for the soul, hard work.  He combed through the rubble of his small town, gathering up the remains of everyone he could find.  He learned to see through the rock and stone, his new found strength and his x-ray vision allowing him to get to their bodies and bones (those that hadn't left bodies and bones).  He buried them all in a graveyard on the edge of town, cutting headstones from granite and etching their names with laser eyes.

It was two and a half years after The End of the World that he was done with the graveyard and began on the next job, feeding the world.

He relocated north, as far from the screams and cries of the world, which were too much for him to bear, building a house for himself in the frozen wastes at the edge of the Arctic.  From there he began to gather resources for an underground farm, like the ones his uncle worked in and he'd grown up around.  It was still small, still just beginning, but it was a beginning.  Still, his own words haunted him.  Any man who walked away from his responsibilities wasn’t a man at all.  He wasn’t a man yet, he knew that.  Even though he was nearly twenty years old, he was still a boy.  A Superboy, maybe, but still, just a boy.

That, he thought, would have to change.  He would have to change before he could call himself a man and so he's begun to leave his Fortress of Solitude and go to where the cries for help are the loudest.  Usually this takes him to the wastelands but more and more he finds himself on the outskirts of Gotham, listening to its sounds.

Powers:  Superboy’s powers are derived from the solar radiation of the sun.  While his Kryptonian DNA was activated by the radiation of a nuclear blast, his body has developed an immunity to surface radiation and fallout and he gets no power from it whatsoever.  Instead, he has to fly above the cloud layer on a regular basis to bask in the rays of the sun to both maintain his powers and more notably, to control them.  Like a battery, his energy diminishes from use, he grows weaker and less able to control himself.  Even if he doesn't use them, his energy still drops and should the sun be denied to him for more than a few days he begins to pale and ashen.  As his power wanes, he tends to lose control, like a flashlight beginning to flicker as the batteries go dead.  Unfortunately, in his case, he’s a flashlight that can level buildings.

Vulnerabilities – He hasn’t encountered any kryptonite yet, but knows about the green stuff enough to stay away from anything that glows green.  He hasn’t yet learned about Gold Kryptonite, irradiated green Kryptonite, which presumably exists in as much if not more than the green stuff now and can nullify his Kryptonian powers for an unknown amount of time.

He found a comic that said Superman was vulnerable to magic, but Jon hasn’t encountered any himself and doesn’t know how it would affect him.  He also knows from firsthand experience how dependent he is on exposure to the sun.  He also knows he can be distracted by having his senses overloaded and while he’s hard to hurt, he can be injured and weakened from severe trauma (most notably in the form of fast healing bruises and sore muscles).

He has no combat training whatsoever and so far, in his limited involvement with anything confrontational, he's relied solely on his near invulnerability, raw strength and superhuman speed.

Abundant Resources:
Sufficient Resources:

Deficient Resources:

Unsavory Adjectives:

Lonely – Jon spent nearly three years isolated, gaining his powers while obsessively recovering the remains of his friends and neighbors.  That time alone broke him some and he feels apart from people.  He longs for connection, but at the same time, feels separate.  To compensate, he will likely form bonds with people quickly (for good or ill), though it's not entirely clear how that might play out.

Addicted/Dependent – While radiation may have triggered his Kryptonian DNA, it also left him with dependence upon Solar Energy.  Without it, his physical and mental state deteriorates.  Those effects weren't as bad his first few years as his powers were emerging, but now it’s growing worse.  In addition, powering himself in the sun’s radiation is a euphoric experience that he’s beginning to long for.  It makes him question why he doesn't simply leave the ground for good, but it also drives him to greater and greater withdraw to make the euphoric process all the stronger.

Fearful - For someone that is nearly invulnerable, incredibly strong and able to not only leap tall buildings but fly above them and level them with his eyes, Jon is remarkably fearful.  He's afraid of being alone (see above), he's also afraid of being around people.  The first comes from his years in isolation, the latter comes from both the voices and cries of those he hears, but also his fear of his own powers.  He spent years without even considering hurting anyone.  When his powers would erupt, the worst he would have to do was fix his ceiling or repair a wall.  It's different where people are involved.  Can he level a building?  Yes.  But what happens when he does?  Can he save someone who is in need?  Probably, but can he save everyone?  Probably not, so how does he choose?  That's too much responsibility for one person, especially one person so young he hasn't even figured out 'who' he is and he worries about what harm he might do before he does.

Overconfident - Jon believes he can't be hurt, at least not in a way that matters.  He knows he can be hurt emotionally but he doesn't think he can be hurt physically.  Because of that, he's not afraid of anyone or anything other than himself (see above).  As a result, he seems to think he can do anything (though he restrains himself since he's not sure he 'should' do anything).
